Description

Spring Hill is a house built in 1846 by Thomas Shaw for WH Smith, a sharebroker. The building features coursed squared gritstone with ashlar details and a steeply-pitched slate roof adorned with gable copings and heraldic beasts at each apex. It has two storeys with attics and a front facade that consists of three bays, with a fourth bay set back on the right, its gable facing east. Designed in the Gothic Revival style, the three-bay front includes a central gabled porch with half-glazed double doors set in a moulded four-centred arch, along with a narrow window above. The windows have cambered arches, with a square bay window on the left featuring four lights and a blocking course, and a two-light window on the first floor with a gablet above. On the right, there is a two-storey canted bay window with four lights and a narrow attic window in the gable above. The house also has inserted dormer windows and large ashlar stacks, with pots removed, located to the left and right at the rear of the ridge. The rear of the house has three bays, with the central entrance bay projecting, a gabled bay on the right, and two- and three-light windows with small-paned frames. An ashlar stack with two cylindrical flues is positioned above the gable. The interior has not been inspected. By around 1872, the house was occupied by Thomas J Kendall, a banker.
