Description
Elmfield is a house, now part of the University of Leeds, built in 1846 by Thomas Shaw, with likely later additions from the 19th century. The building features coursed squared stone and a blue slate hipped roof. It is two storeys high and has three bays. The central entrance has a pilastered porch with half-glazed double doors, an entablature, and a modillion cornice. To the left, there is a single-storey canted bay window with a cornice similar to that of the porch. On the right, a two-storey square bay has two-light windows on each storey, a segmental moulding, and a carved panel above the ground-floor window, along with a dentilled cornice and blocking course at the first floor. The first floor features a single window and a two-light window in moulded architraves, with a continuous sill moulding. The building has a modillion eaves cornice and tall dentilled stacks on both sides, positioned behind the ridge line. The interior has not been inspected. This house was likely occupied by Mrs. Hammond around 1881 and Thomas Hammond, a dyer, around 1878. The porch and canted bay window may have been added later.
