Description

This is a pair of semi-detached houses, now part of Devonshire Hall at the University of Leeds. They were built in the mid-19th century, with some alterations made in the late 20th century. The houses are constructed from coursed squared stone with ashlar details and feature a slate hipped roof. They have a back-to-back plan, consisting of two storeys over a basement, with an inserted or altered attic storey.

On each facade, the ground-floor windows are round-arched and have impost bands that connect to keyed mouldings. The upper-floor windows are square-headed and include a continuous sill band. The entrance facades, which have three bays, feature a central porch with a keyed round arch, pilasters that support console brackets carved with strapwork and lion masks, and a deep modillion cornice. Each entrance has a four-panel door with a fanlight above, flanked by round-arched side windows and a larger similar window on the ground floor.

There is a large three-light mullioned stair window with an architrave and cornice, along with two narrow six-pane windows in architraves on the first floor. The rear of the houses has a modillion cornice and large moulded stacks on the ridge, both left and right. The north facade, which faces the garden and driveway, has a window arrangement of 2:4:2 on the first floor, with the outer paired windows set in slightly projecting hipped-roof bays and canted bay windows on the ground floor. The south facade features steps with an ornate cast-iron balustrade leading to service entrances in the projecting low two-storey outer bays, and large three-light mullion windows that likely light the kitchens. There are also inserted 20th-century windows on the south and east sides. The interior has not been inspected. Originally known as Regent Villas, this building is part of a development that may have been designed by John Child, as referenced in the context of Devonshire Hall: Old Hall.
