Description
Cumberland Priory is a house built around 1840 by architect John Child. It is constructed of coursed stone with a slate roof that features stone copings and quoins. Designed in the Tudor Revival style, the building has two storeys and an attic, and it is three bays wide. The central entrance bay is gabled and projects from the main structure, featuring a moulded depressed arch doorway. The windows are characterized by mullions throughout, including a four-light window to the left and a three-light window to the right, with two-light windows with hoodmoulds flanking an oriel window on the first floor. The roof has plain kneelers and corbelled eaves. On the left side, there is a stone canted bay window and an attic window in the gable. The rear of the house has a gabled wing. The interior has not been inspected. This was the architect's own residence until his death in 1868, and according to the 1872 Directory, it was later home to shipping merchant Nathan Gustavus.
