Description

The Batley Barless Fire Company is a shop and warehouse building dating from around 1870. It is constructed of ashlar stone and features a pitched slate roof with a moulded eaves cornice. The building has three storeys and a basement, taking advantage of the sloping site. There is a sill band that runs along the first and second floors, and it occupies a prominent corner location.

The facade has four bays on each side, with a curving corner bay. The basement level facing Bradford Road includes shop windows. The floor above serves as the ground floor on Hick Lane, where there is a portico supported by Tuscan columns, topped with a full entablature and pediment. The entrance features a six-panel door with a fanlight above it. The windows on the ground floor are round arched with consoles that support the cornice. The first-floor windows are also round arched and have vermiculated keystones, while the second-floor windows are segment-headed with jambs that are lined through as consoles supporting the eaves cornice. The windows in the curving corner bay are uniquely curved, including the glass.
