Description

This is a large, five-story warehouse and office block dating from approximately 1871-75. It occupies a long return frontage to both Vicar Lane and Hick Street. Constructed of sandstone ashlar, the building has twelve bays facing Vicar Lane. The ground floor is emphasized by corniced piers with fielded blocks to the shafts, and features Doric consoles to the frieze and a bold cornice above. Deep grooving marks the area between the basement and ground floor windows. A large, paired waggonway and office portal is located on the right-hand side, flanked by columns with similar blocking to the shafts rising from panelled pedestals. The flat, linteled waggonway is fitted with fine, geometrically patterned iron gates. Similar details are present on the waggonway and gates at the far end of the Hick Street frontage, and to a portal situated off-centre. The first-floor windows have flat-eared surrounds with incised ornament, while the upper floors have simpler windows set within sill bands. A carved console bracket eaves cornice runs along the building. Tall, bracketed corniced chimneys are also a feature.
