Description
55 Well Street is a building dating from around 1865 to 1869, likely designed by Eli Milnes. It is a five-storey block of offices with a wool warehouse at the rear. The top floor appears to be a rebuild or a later addition. The exterior is constructed of dressed sandstone "brick" with ashlar dressings.
On the ground floor, there are two outer doorways and three segmental arched windows situated between grooved flanking pilasters, topped with an entablature. The right-hand doorway remains unaltered, featuring a semi-circular fanlight and a console keystone above the arch. The upper floors have five windows set on moulded sill courses. The first-floor windows are framed with architrave surrounds, with the central window topped by a pediment supported by carved fluted console brackets. Above the third floor, there is a bed mould and a moulded cornice.
