Description

The Barclays Bank Building, along with its boundary wall and gate piers, is a detached bank building designed in the Free Gothic style and dated 1877. It is constructed from ashlar stone and features a steeply pitched gabled slate roof with ashlar roll top copings and impressive ashlar stacks topped with caps. The building has two carved finials and paired moulded brackets supporting the gutter.

The entrance front consists of three storeys and seven bays, with the three bays on the right slightly projecting forward under a gabled roof. The windows on the right side are archivolted and have engaged colonnettes with richly foliated capitals. The ground floor windows are square-headed, the first-floor windows have shallow segmental heads, and the second-floor windows have stilted round arches with pointed hood moulds. At the apex of the gable is a blind round-arched window flanked by blind recesses, featuring an archivolt adorned with richly carved foliage. The left side windows are square-headed with similar detailing, and a small gable contains two round-headed windows.

To the left of the building is a stone entrance porch that is elaborately carved, featuring three engaged columns on each side with capitals of richly carved foliage. The round arch above the doorway bears the inscription "WEST RIDING UNION BANK LIMITED," and the gable apex of the porch showcases carved diaper work with the date 1877. In the tympanum is a round carved plate with three shields, the central one displaying the Huddersfield coat of arms. The interior of the building has been altered.

The boundary walls are made of ashlar stone and are topped with iron railings that return to the building. There are five square ashlar gate piers with tapering chamfers that lead to octagonal pointed caps.
