Description

A school and attached schoolmaster's house, dating to 1876, with alterations in the late 20th century. The building is constructed of coursed, rock-faced stone with ashlar dressings, featuring steeply pitched roofs with coped gables, kneelers, and finials. Four stacks are present. The design is in the Gothic Revival style, forming an L-shaped layout.

The south-facing facade on Bradford Road has eleven windows arranged 1:1:4:3:2. A projecting, two-storey gabled porch is positioned off-centre, featuring a pointed entrance arch with inner double doors and fanlight above a datestone and a single round-headed window. To the left is a gable with three casement windows, topped by a large pointed arch window with wheel tracery. To the right, a projecting four-window wing has four round-headed casements on the ground floor and four casements above, with a panel inscribed "GIRLS AND INFANT SCHOOL" between them. Further to the right are three windows with single and paired casements to each floor. A projecting gabled wing sits beyond, incorporating a 20th-century lean-to addition on the ground floor, and featuring two large windows in pointed surrounds, each with three graduated lancets above.

The west-facing facade on Park Road has fourteen windows arranged on a sloping site. A nine-window wing on the right includes a doorway in the eighth bay, with an overlight and moulded ashlar hood. All windows here are two-light mullion casements. A projecting porch with a pointed arch doorway (now a window) is situated to the left, with a panel inscribed "BOYS" above. To the left of that is a gable with a three-light mullion casement and pointed relieving arch, followed by a set-back pointed archway linking the school to the former schoolmaster's house. A further gabled wing follows with a three-light mullion window and a similar two-light window above.

Attached boundary walls and gates enclose the site. The boundary wall, topped with piers and ornate iron railings (partly replaced), runs along Bradford Road, curves around the corner, and extends up Park Road. The Park Road section is stepped and incorporates two gateways with square, chamfered piers with pyramidal caps, and a third gateway with scroll caps and an original cast iron gate.
