Description
The war memorial in Batley, located on Cambridge Street, was erected in 1923 to commemorate those who served in the First World War. It features a slightly larger than life bronze figure of an infantryman holding a rifle, which stands on a square stone column with a cornice, resting on a square base. The column is inscribed with the words:
IN
GRATEFUL MEMORY
OF
THE MEN OF THIS TOWN
WHO FELL
IN THE GREAT WAR
1914-1918
AND
IN THE WORLD WAR
1939-1945
Surrounding the memorial is a circular boundary wall that includes four iron gates and iron railings. There are twelve bronze plaques listing the names of those who fell, along with two additional plaques that honor those from the 1939-1945 war and subsequent campaigns.
