Description

Zion Methodist Chapel, dated 1869, was designed by Walter Hanstock and Michael Sheard of Batley. The building is constructed of ashlar and features a hipped slate roof with a moulded eaves cornice. It stands two storeys high with a basement and has a seven-bay hall that is five bays wide at the gable front. The central three-bay section is pedimented and flanked by Giant Corinthian pilasters, with similar pilasters at the corners that are doubled at the returns. The pediment and eaves cornice are supported by large console brackets, and the pediment includes an oculus with scrolled foliage support, along with the word "ZION" and the date "1869."

The chapel has triple doorways, each featuring double, fielded panelled doors that are round arched and arranged in an arcade, with acanthus leaf moulding on the capitals of plain pilasters. The spandrels are richly carved with scrolled foliage and doves, and there are large console keystones. The flanking windows in the rusticated wall are also round arched and recessed, while the first-floor windows are round arched. Boldly carved consoles support pediments over the three central windows and cornices over the flanking windows, all of which have a blind balustrade beneath.

The seven-bay side elevations feature round arched windows with rusticated voussoirs on the ground floor and an impost band on the first floor. The basement lights are square-headed.

Access to the chapel is via a broad flight of steps with a heavy pierced balustrade and carved piers. The interior is fine and complete, featuring a continuous oval gallery supported by slender Corinthian columns, leading to an organ chamber flanked by Corinthian columns and pilasters. The elaborate organ case is framed in a Corinthian order. The main hall and gallery are box-pewed throughout, and there is an elegantly carved pulpit with five Corinthian colonnettes, accessed by a flight of steps. A slightly raised rostrum is bounded by a Communion rail with turned wooden balusters, and there is good stained glass on the ground floor, with a lowered ceiling.
