Description
The Former Technical School, built in 1893 and around 1900, was designed by Harry Bagshaw Buckley of Batley. It features rock-faced stone with ashlar dressing and slate roofs, including a central roof with a clerestory. The building has raised gables that are coped and have kneelers, along with various stacks. The street front showcases a slightly projecting gabled center with two large four-light cross mullion windows topped with entablatures. Above these is a single five-light window with a bracketed cill, and below the inscription "TECHNICAL SCHOOL" in a carved panel, which is above a carved entablature and a round-headed window flanked by blind arches, topped with a steep carved pediment.
To the right, there is a three-storey range with four windows. This section includes a segment-headed doorway with double panel doors and a fanlight in a moulded surround featuring a mermaid keystone. To the right of this doorway are three two-light cross mullion windows with flat hoods. Above, there are four taller similar windows, and above these again are two large nine-pane through-eaves dormer windows with pediments.
To the left is the slightly later Stubley Memorial Wing, which has a four-window range and a doorway to the left with double doors and an overlight in a moulded surround. To the right, there are three single-light transom windows with flat hoods, and above are four similar windows reaching the eaves. Further left, a slightly projecting gable wing features a projecting center with flanking pilasters that rise through the gable. This center has a four-light cross mullion window with incised heads, above which is a similar window, and above that is a large semi-circular window with glazing bars and a large carved keystone, which serves as the cill for three blind windows in the gable, topped with a ball finial. The Stubley Memorial Wing was funded by the Stubley family, owners of Bolton Mills, one of the largest textile mill complexes in Batley.
