Description

Near Troughs is a former farmhouse dating from 1746, as indicated by a datestone, with modern alterations. The building is constructed from hammer-dressed stone and features quoins. It has a pitched stone slate roof, with grey slate on the north pitch, and coped gables on moulded footstones.

The farmhouse is two storeys high. On the south elevation, the ground floor includes an entrance with a deep millstone grit lintel and quoins, featuring chamfered reveals. The lintel has a carved inscription: AS MS 17 46. There is a later entrance with a stone surround, one large modern bow window, and one 3-light stone mullioned window, although the mullions have been removed.

On the first floor, there is a 6-light stone mullioned window that is chamfered and recessed, featuring a king mullion, a 4-light stone mullioned window that is also chamfered and recessed, and a 3-light stone mullioned window, again chamfered and recessed.

The eastern part of the building, which may have been a former barn, has a ground floor with a large former doorway that is now blocked and replaced with a modern 3-light window, along with a small doorway featuring a deep lintel and quoins, and a later single light. On the first floor, there is a 3-light stone mullioned window that is chamfered and recessed, alongside a modern 3-light window.

The west gable has a 2-light stone mullioned window, with one light blocked, while the east gable features an entrance with a deep lintel and quoins made of millstone grit. The north elevation includes an extension at the ground floor and modern windows.
