Description

The Tunnel End Cottages are a pair of semi-detached former Tunnel Keeper's cottages, now serving as a visitor's centre. They were built in the early 19th century and have undergone some alterations in the late 20th century. The cottages are two stories high and consist of four bays. They are constructed from coursed rustic stone and feature a grey slate pitched roof with a slate ridge and two stone chimney stacks.

Each cottage has a single doorway on the ground floor, with a sash window to the left. The upper storey contains four sash windows that alternate between wide and narrow. All openings are fitted with stone sills and lintels. The east gable end includes a single recessed mullioned attic light and a second storey mullioned sash window.

There are also late 20th-century adjoining sheds made of coursed rustic stone on either side of the cottages, with two on the west side and one on the east, replacing similar outbuildings that were previously on the site. The cottages are included for their group value with the listed Standedge Tunnel portals and the Tunnel End Reservoir aqueduct.
