Description

The entrance portal to the Standedge Canal Tunnel, built between 1798 and 1811, is a significant canal tunnel portal designed by engineer Benjamin Outram. It features a semicircular ashlar arch that leads into a stone-vaulted tunnel. The structure is constructed with coursed rubble walling, accented by a string course and ashlar coping. The tunnel itself is 3 miles and 171 yards long, 3 yards wide, and 17 feet high, with a water level of 8 feet.
