Description

Upper Lumb Cottage and Upper Lumb Farmhouse is a house and cottage located in Sowerby Bridge, with the house dating from the early to mid-17th century and the cottage added in the 18th century. There have been alterations in the 20th century. The building is constructed of painted stone and features a stone slate roof. It has two storeys, with the house having five first-floor windows and a one-bay cottage on the left.

The cottage has a 20th-century lean-to addition that obscures the ground floor, which has a door on the right and three single-light windows above. The house features double-chamfered mullion windows on the ground floor and chamfered windows above. From left to right on the ground floor, there is a 4-light window that has been reduced to a 2-light window, a 5-light window now reduced to a 3-light window, a 2-light window now reduced to a 1-light fire window, another similar window, and a quoined moulded ogee-arched doorway with a 20th-century door and a lintel that is dated and initialled. There are also a 3-light window now reduced to a 2-light window and a 2-light window now reduced to a 1-light window.

On the first floor, there are two 4-light windows now reduced to 2-light windows and three 2-light windows now reduced to 1-light windows. There are stacks at the left end of the house and on the ridge between the fire windows. At the rear, the house has two gabled wings, with all windows dating from the 20th century. Inside, the left room of the house, which is now part of the cottage, features a small Tudor-arched moulded stone fireplace.
