Description

Higgin Chamber is a house located on Sowerby Lane in Sowerby Bridge, dating from the mid-17th century with later alterations. The building is constructed of coursed dressed stone and features a stone slate roof. It has two storeys and a garden front with two gabled bays separated by a straight joint. The right bay was refenestrated in the 19th century, now featuring a 2-light flat-faced mullion window on each floor. The left bay has double-chamfered mullion windows. There is a board door in a plain stone surround to the right of a 2-light fire window and a 6-light window with a transom and king mullion, both of which have a dripmould above. The first floor has a 9-light window with a king mullion and dripmould, while a blind 2-light window is located under a dripmould in the gable. Both gables have coping, shaped kneelers, and finials, with a carved stone at the valley coping and an arched finial on the right gable. Renewed stacks are present at the rear of each bay.

On the right return, which faces the road, there are double-chamfered mullion windows and a 4-panel door in a plain stone surround on the right. To the left, a gabled bay projects, featuring an 8-light window with a transom, king mullion, and dripmould on the ground floor, alongside a 3-over-5-light window with a dripstone above. This section also has shaped kneelers, coping, and finials. On the first floor to the left of this bay, there is a blind 3-light chamfered mullion window with painted glazing bars. The roof on the right is hipped and has a finial.

The left return has an added single-storey outshut on the right, with a 2-light double-chamfered mullion window, although the mullion has been removed. There is a dripmould over this window and at the right corner. To the left, there is a 4-light window that has been reduced to a 2-light flat-faced mullion window, with a 4-light and a 2-light window of the same type above. On the far left of the first floor, there is a taking-in door. The interior has not been inspected. Historically, the house was owned by the Stansfields in the 16th century and the first half of the 17th century, and was later tenanted by the Hopkinson family.
