Description
Numbers 1, 3, 5, and 7, along with the attached barn in Branton, are a group of four cottages dating from the late 18th century. They are constructed from coursed dressed stone and topped with a stone slate roof. The buildings are two storeys high, with each cottage consisting of one bay, while the barn has two bays.
The south front features quoins and three cottages, each with a plain stone surround for the doorway. The doorway of No. 5 is now blocked and has a circular window added around 1984. Each cottage has flat-faced mullion windows, with No. 3 and No. 5 having four lights on each floor, while No. 7 has three lights on each floor. The barn, located on the right, has a blocked cart entry with quoins, imposts, voussoirs, and a raised keystone, as well as a mistal door with tie-stones to the left and a two-light window above the cart entry, although the mullion has been removed.
There are corniced stacks at the left end, where Nos. 5 and 7 meet, and a renewed brick stack at the junction of No. 7 and the barn. At the rear, the barn has an opposing cart entry. No. 1 features a plain stone surround doorway and a window on the left of each floor that originally had three lights but now has two. No. 3's ground-floor window has been converted into a door, while No. 5's window has had its mullions removed; on the first floor, there are windows with four, one, and three lights. The right return of the barn includes chamfered slit vents, and the left return of No. 3 has a two-light window on the first floor.
