Description

Sand House is a late 17th to early 18th century laithehouse located on Sowerby Lane in Sowerby Bridge. It is constructed from coursed dressed stone and features a stone slate roof. The building has one and a half storeys, with both the house and barn consisting of two bays. The house displays quoins and includes, from left to right, a 4-light flat-faced mullion window, a 4-light chamfered mullion window with a short 3-light chamfered mullion window above, and a board door set in a chamfered surround. There is a stack to the left, positioned in front of the roof pitch, and another stack at the right end, with the flue set diagonally and featuring broaches and a cornice.

The barn on the right has a chamfered, quoined cart-entry on the left with a monolithic lintel, slit vents to the right, and a chamfered mistal door with tie-stones at the far right. The rear of the building has a late 19th to 20th-century cottage that is not of special interest, but to the far right, the old rear wall is exposed and features two square chamfered lights, one of which is blocked. The left return has a 2-light chamfered window in the gable.

Inside the house, a stud partition wall divides the bays. The right-hand bay contains a stone fireplace with a deep lintel and chamfered ledge, while the left-hand bay features a stone fireplace with a later set-pot, original spine-beams, first-floor floorboards, and stone stairs at the rear with a wooden door at the base and a pantry beneath the flight. The barn has a queen strut roof. At the time of the resurvey, the building was in a state of disrepair.
