Description

Middle Hathershelf Old Farmhouse is a house dating from the mid-17th century, with alterations and additions made in the early 18th century. It is constructed from large dressed stone and features a stone slate roof, presenting an irregular plan over two storeys.

The south front showcases a double chamfered mullioned window with a king mullion containing six lights. This window has a hoodmould with a decorative label stop on the left, which is broken on the right. Above it is a chamfered mullioned window with five lights. There is a 19th-century doorway with monolithic jambs, marked by a clear break in the stonework, and this doorway has a basket arched lintel inscribed with "T S S". A former six-light double chamfered mullioned window with a king mullion is partly obscured by a later building that is at right angles to it. The hoodmould over this window still preserves one decorative label stop.

On the left-hand return wall, there is an extruded stack that rises to the gable. Inside, the first-floor chamber features a fireplace with a Tudor arched lintel and a stop-chamfered surround. To the right of the stack, there is a single arched light with sunken spandrels, and above it, a two-light chamfered window without a mullion. The gable is coped with kneelers.

At the rear, there is an attached double-pile range under a two-span roof. The left-hand gable breaks forward and has quoined angles, along with a six-light thin flat-faced mullioned window and a three-light chamfered mullioned window above it. Set back is a parallel range that is likely of earlier date, featuring a broad coped gable with kneelers. The ground floor has chamfered mullioned windows of two, four, and five lights, and above, on the first floor, there is a double chamfered mullioned window with a king mullion containing seven lights (two plus five).
