Description
Upper Hathershelf is a house that was built in 1687, as indicated by the initials "TSG" and the date on the lintel. It is constructed from large dressed stone and has a stone slate roof. The layout features a three-room, through-passage, double-pile plan, with quoins at the corners.
On the ground floor, there are double chamfered mullioned windows: a five-light window in the parlour, a five-light window in the housebody (both of which are missing two mullions), and a three-light fire-window. The first floor has two chamfered mullioned windows, each with four lights (also missing two mullions). The doorway features a dated lintel with an inscription set within a tressure, and it has renewed monolithic jambs.
There are two chamfered mullioned windows that were originally two lights, which have been modified to create a three-light window. Above this is a four-light chamfered mullioned window, which is missing two mullions. The left-hand return wall displays watershot masonry and has a gable stack, while another stack is located at the back of the through-passage.
At the rear, the original doorway to the through passage remains, featuring a straight lintel with double tie-stone jambs and a stop-chamfered surround. To the left of this doorway is a window with a chamfered surround. The remaining windows are flat-faced mullioned and date from the early 19th century. The gables have kneelers but do not have copings.
