Description
Sunderland House, also known as New Sunderland, is an 1811 house built for former mill owners. The building is constructed of ashlar stone and features a slate roof. It is two stories tall with a symmetrical three-bay front that includes a semi-circular arched doorway topped with a fan-light and a porch supported by Corinthian columns. On either side of the doorway are tall windows with projecting sills but no visible jambs. The eaves have a projecting cornice, and the return walls have similar windows.
At the rear, there is a central tall stair window with a semi-circular head, complete with impost blocks and a keystone, which retains its original glazing. Flanking the rear are projecting corner wings, each featuring flat-faced mullioned windows. The left wing has a four-light window with a five-light window above it on the first floor, while the right wing has a three-light window with a four-light window above, which includes a blocked taking-in door that once led to a former warehouse. The building has three hipped roofs, with single stacks on the rear corner wings and three stacks on the main house.
