Description
The Hermitage is a house located on Main Street in Sunderland Bridge, dating from the mid-17th century, with alterations and additions made around 1930. The building is constructed of coursed sandstone rubble and features a Welsh slate roof along with 19th-century cream-brick chimney stacks. Access to the house is from a rear wing.
The garden front is three stories high and has three bays, characterized by a tall plinth and large squared quoins. There is an outline of a former two-story, gabled porch in the central bay. The circa 1930 windows have 20 panes and are set in chamfered concrete surrounds. The central ground-floor window, which was originally a doorway, is topped with a segmental pediment. The roof is steeply pitched and includes three gabled half dormers with original copings and 9-pane sash windows. Stone-coped gables and transverse end stacks are also present, along with small original chamfered fire-windows on both returns.
To the right rear, there is a two-story, two-bay addition from around 1930, which features identical concrete window surrounds and a similar pedimented doorway. The interior was remodeled in the early 20th century, but the roof still retains five adzed upper crucks made of heavy scantling.
