Description

North and east courtyard ranges and walls are located to the east of Croxdale Hall. These structures consist of two ranges of courtyard buildings and a linking wall. The north range, built in the early to mid-18th century, was altered in the early 19th century. The east range and wall were constructed in the mid-19th century. They are made of squared sandstone with purple slate roofs and feature rebuilt brick chimney stacks.

The ranges enclose the north and east sides of the courtyard, with a wall connecting them at the northeast corner. The long north range is one storey with a loft and has 14 openings on the ground floor. It includes a wide segmental entrance archway from the early 19th century and four smaller, similar archways with boarded double doors on the west side. Near the center, there is a former smithy with a boarded door and a fixed window featuring five vertical lights. The east side has three boarded doors and three partly-glazed hit-and-miss windows. There are also six small two-light loft windows with flat-faced mullions positioned just under the eaves. The roof is steeply pitched and hipped at the west, with a central ridge stack above the smithy.

The linking wall is tall and flat-coped, featuring a large central doorway. The single-storey east range consists of two sections: one with four bays and another with two bays, marked by a straight joint at the junction. The openings have flush surrounds with alternating jambs. The four-bay section has boarded doors in the end bays and two six-pane sash windows in between. The two-bay section has two boarded doors with small top-hung casements above. The roof is a continuous low-pitched hipped design with stone ridge tiles and a tall off-centre ridge stack.

These buildings are included for their group value. The adjoining wall across the courtyard at right angles near the center of the north range and the wall on the south return of the east range are not of special interest.
