Description
The garden wall and gates located to the south-east of Croxdale Hall date from the mid-18th century, with the west gate being an early 20th-century addition. The wall surrounds three sides of the garden south of the south courtyard range. It is constructed from squared sandstone rubble and features dressed coping blocks, standing between 1.0 to 1.5 metres high. The west wall measures 20 metres long with a rounded south-west corner, while the south wall is 40 metres long but partly broken down at the west end. The east wall runs for 30 metres to connect with the one-storey east range of courtyard buildings. There are narrow gateways near the centres of the east and west walls. The small two-leaf east gate has double rails and bars forming a margin around two central panels, featuring delicate bifurcated scrollwork. Each large upper panel has a small vase with a single rose on a thin stem, along with a similar scrolled crest. The two-leaf west gate has double rails and closely-paced bars, with each panel containing a central roundel that features a silhouette of a cockerel encircled by foliage decoration.
