Description

The South Courtyard Range and Cottage, located to the east of Croxdale Hall, is a range of ancillary buildings dating from the late 17th century, with 19th-century alterations. Constructed from coursed sandstone rubble, it features Welsh slate roofs and brick chimney stacks. The structure is a two-storey linear range consisting of three linked parts: a two-bay section on the right that adjoins the rear of the hall, a taller and wider three-bay centre, and a two-bay cottage on the left.

There is a single-storey, three-bay lean-to that spans the junction of the right section and the centre block. Most ground-floor openings are from the 19th century and include boarded doors and replaced sash windows. The centre section retains a chamfered, Tudor-arched doorway and a double-chamfered window surround, although the central mullion has been removed. The right bay of the cottage features a fielded six-panel door set in an identical doorway. Above, there are small two-light mullioned windows, with two on the cottage and three on the centre block. The roofs are steeply pitched, with the centre section being the highest, while the cottage roof is hipped on the left. The end and ridge stacks have mostly been rebuilt. The lean-to range includes two 12-pane horizontal-sliding sashes and has a low pent roof. The rear has blocked original openings and 19th-century sashes. This building is included for its group value.
