Description
Stoney Spring is a 2-storey house that is initialled and dated "I B T" and features an added pair of 3-storey cottages from 1706, built in the early 19th century. The building is constructed from hammer-dressed stone and has a stone slate roof. The earliest part of the structure is a 2-cell house with double chamfered mullioned windows on the ground floor, consisting of 4 lights in the parlour and 8 lights in the housebody. The first floor has late 18th century thin flat-faced mullioned windows with 6 lights and 8 lights, and there is a cottage doorway inserted to the left.
The original door entry is located in the right-hand return wall, forming a gable entry next to the stack, and features a basket-arched lintel, composite jambs, and a chamfered surround. The rear of the building is set back to earth and includes a 5-light chamfered mullioned window on the first floor, which was part of a former weaving loft. Attached to the left-hand return wall is a cottage range that is set back under a salt-pie roof.
The cottages are handed pairs with paired doorways that have monolithic jambs, and on either side, there are 2-light sashed windows with altered glazing. The first floor has 4 single lights, while the second floor has 2 single lights in the attics. The rear features 2 doorways with tie-stone jambs at the first-floor level, and there are 3 stacks along the ridge. Inside the housebody, there is a segmental arched fireplace with large skewbacks and a chamfered surround.
