Description

10 and 12 Blind Lane is an early 18th-century house that was converted into two cottages in the early 19th century. The building is constructed from hammer-dressed stone and features a stone slate roof. It has two storeys and a three-room linear plan with a rear wing and an added loom shop.

The east front has quoins, and the first cell includes double chamfered mullioned windows with five lights on each floor. The second cell has a doorway with monolithic jambs and a flat-faced mullioned window with three wide lights; above it, there is a five-light chamfered mullioned window on the first floor. The third cell features two-light sash windows with plain stone surrounds and projecting sills, retaining 12-paned glazing. There are two stacks at the ridge. The left-hand return wall is back to earth and has an added cell at the rear of the first cell under a separate roof, which includes a semi-circular arched doorway at the first-floor level.

The west front, likely associated with textile manufacture, has an unusual corner entrance with semi-circular arches to the west and north, supported by a short Tuscan column. This entrance is believed to have allowed packhorses to load under shelter from the weather. The west front also features five-light thin flat-faced mullioned windows on each floor and a single stack at the ridge. Set back at right angles is the rear wing, which has a tall 12-light flat-faced mullioned and transomed window in the gable wall, coped with kneelers and featuring a stack. The right-hand return wall includes a tall L-shaped window made up of four lights on the first floor, with two over two lights that are mullioned and transomed. There are also two doorways, one of which is blocked. Inside the second cell, there is a fireplace with a double cyma moulded stone shelf.
