Description
Wheatley Royd Farmhouse is a house divided into two occupations, dating from the early 17th century with some alterations likely made in the late 19th century. It is constructed of large dressed stone and has a stone slate roof. The building features a three-room, through-passage plan with a projecting cross-wing. It stands two storeys tall, although the service end has been reduced to a single storey.
The cross-wing has a cyma-moulded string course above the ground floor windows, which are double chamfered mullioned windows, some of which are missing all or some of their mullions. There is a former 12-light mullioned and transomed window, with a smaller version above it. The right-hand return wall has two-light windows that are blocked. The gabled roof has copings and later kneelers, while the hall is under a lower roof line. A former 16-light mullioned and transomed window retains only its king mullion, and above it on the first floor is a former 7-light window.
An inserted 19th-century doorway with monolithic jambs is located next to the through-passage doorway, which features a Tudor arched lintel with composite jambs and a chamfered surround, topped with a hoodmould that has decorative label stops. A 4-light window also has a hoodmould with straight returns. There is one stack that backs onto the through-passage and two additional stacks.
At the rear, the former double chamfered mullioned and transomed windows in the cross-wing have hoodmoulds above them, with the first-floor window featuring label stops initialled "R A" and "A H". Inside the cross-wing, there are chamfered spine beams supporting large heavy joists, and a fireplace with a depressed Tudor arched lintel and a chamfered surround that continues to form spandrels. The upper chamber has a similar, though smaller, fireplace.
