Description
Spital House is an early 19th-century house built of ashlar stone. It features a hipped slate roof with two rendered ridge stacks and a modillion cornice, all set on a plinth. The building has two storeys and three bays, with ground and first floor sill bands and a first floor band. The central doorway is framed by a porch that includes a panelled door with a traceried overlight, flanked by single pilasters and topped with a flat modillion decorated projecting hood supported by Doric columns. A 20th-century iron handrail is present. On either side of the doorway are single glazing bar sash windows, with three similar sashes above on the first floor. The east front has five bays, featuring a central glazing bar sash flanked by single protruding window bays topped with an ashlar balustrade. Above this are five additional glazing bar sashes. The interior, possibly designed by Lindley and Woodhead, includes a two-flight return staircase with an iron balustrade, featuring two wrought iron balusters decorated with two small roundels per tread. The fireplace is adorned with figurative, beaten metal panels.
