Description
The Blyth and Hodsock War Memorial is a war memorial unveiled in 1922, designed by Charles Spooner of London. It is made from light-coloured Cornish granite and features a tall, tapering, octagonal shaft topped with a Latin cross, which is set beneath a gable. Below the cross is a red-painted cross of St George on a raised shield. The shaft rests on a tapering octagonal plinth, which is inscribed on the front face with the words: IN HONOURED MEMORY OF THE MEN OF BLYTH AND HODSOCK/ WHO FELL SERVING THEIR KING AND COUNTRY IN THE YEARS OF OUR LORD 1914 – 1918, along with the names of 26 individuals who fell, displayed on three additional faces. A fifth face lists the names of four men who fell during 1939-1945. The plinth is set on a two-stage shallow octagonal base, with the upper step inscribed with the phrase: THEY DIED THAT WE MIGHT LIVE, THEY LIVE UNTO GOD.
