Description

St John's is a cottage that was formerly a village school and the Hospital of Saint John the Evangelist, which was refounded in 1226 and rebuilt on this site in 1446 using older materials. The windows were altered in the 17th and 20th centuries. The building is constructed of coursed rubble with ashlar quoins and features a pantile roof with stone-coped gables, kneelers, and a single finial on the right ridge, along with two brick gable stacks. It is a single storey plus garret structure with four bays, set on a chamfered plinth.

The doorway has a wooden door with iron fittings and is framed by a 13th-century ashlar surround, which includes dog tooth ornamentation on the jambs and a segmental arch, topped with a hood mould. To the left of the doorway is a 20th-century casement window with a cavetto hood mould. On the right are two similar casement windows, each with their own hood moulds. The east gable features a blocked 17th-century stone mullion window in the garret, while the north front has a 17th-century five-light stone mullion window to the left, along with evidence of additional, now blocked, mullion windows.
