Description
Thorpe House is an early 19th-century residential accommodation located on the east side of Rochdale Road in Sowerby Bridge. The building is constructed of ashlar stone and features a stone slate roof. It has two storeys with a cellar and consists of five bays. The design includes a plinth and cill bands, and there is a three-step podium leading to a Tuscan portico with a cornice and triangular pediment. This portico fronts a half-glazed door with a fanlight and an architrave in a rusticated surround. The windows are sashes with stone lintels, and there is an eaves string and dentil cornice beneath a hipped roof. Stacks are present at the left end and at the ends of the hips.
A circa 1970 extension on the right links the house to a coach-house, but this extension is not of interest. The rear of the house mirrors the front, with a central doorway that is simpler and features a 20th-century glazed door. The right return has three bays, with a central two-storey arched niche that includes a tall stair window, and the sashes match those at the front. Inside, there is a notable cantilevered stair with decorative iron balusters.
