Description

The Church of St Mary is a Grade II listed church located in Sowerby Bridge, built in 1848 with later additions. It features coursed squared stone and a stone slate roof, designed in an Early English style. The church includes a west tower, a five-bay nave, and a one-bay apsidal chancel with additions on the north and south sides.

The tower has three stages with offset angle buttresses and a band at each stage. The western doorway is a pointed arch with a moulded surround and colonettes, though one colonette is missing. The second stage features a two-light Y-tracery window with a hoodmould, while the belfry has a two-light cusped window. The tower is topped with a steeple that includes a vesica and a finial, along with a corbel table.

The nave has a plinth and a cill band, with bays separated by gabled buttresses and lancet windows. It also has a corbelled parapet with gable coping and pinnacles at each end. The chancel's lower east end has a three-sided apse with a lancet window on each face.

Inside, the nave once had a western gallery and features corbelled roof trusses with ogee struts. The pointed chancel arch rests on corbelled attached columns. In the apse, columns support ribs with a central boss. There are box pews remaining in the nave, along with a later traceried panelled reredos adorned with a fruit and foliage frieze, a later pulpit, and an open-work altar rail. At the time of the last survey, the church was undergoing restoration, and the western half of the nave was being converted into a social area.
