Description

Windy Nook is a house and cottage located on Thornley Lane in Saddleworth. The cottage was added in the late 17th century or early 18th century, as indicated by "HS 1648" (Henry Shaw) inscribed on the door lintel. The building is constructed of squared rubble and features a graduated stone slate roof with a brick chimney stack. It has a two-unit former baffle-entry plan and stands two storeys high, with a one-bay cottage added to the right.

The front of the building has a projecting plinth and a door to the right that features a basket-headed lintel and a chamfered surround. The rest of the front is mostly blind, except for a 20th-century window. The rear of the building includes a two-light fire-window, a four-light window, and a three-light window on the ground floor, with two three-light windows on the first floor. All windows are double-chamfered and have cavetto-moulded mullions, with flat-faced and double-chamfered mullion windows on the gable, one of which has been converted into a door. A ridge chimney stack is present.

The cottage features double-chamfered mullion windows at the front and rear, with the front partially obscured by a later lean-to and the rear having a mullion removed. Inside, the beam pattern suggests the existence of a former inglenook fireplace, and there is a tie-beam roof truss of massive proportions.
