Description
This is a mid-18th century farmhouse and cottages, located on the north side of Oldham Road in Grotton, Saddleworth. The buildings are constructed of squared rubble stone and have a graduated stone slate roof. The arrangement is based on single and double-depth plans, comprising a total of seven bays and two storeys.
Number 3 (the first bay) features a 3-light double-chamfered stone mullion window on the ground floor, a 2-light flat-faced mullion window above, and a 19th-century door to the right. Number 2 (the second bay) has a chamfered stone door surround with a lintel inscribed with the date 1731, and 4-light mullion windows on both floors; the ground floor windows are chamfered, while those on the first floor are flat-faced. Bays 3 and 4 contain 3 and 4-light recessed flat-faced stone mullion windows on both floors, flanking a blocked door with 4 and 3-light chamfered mullion windows on the first floor. Bays 5 and 6 are set back, with a door to the left and a 4-light recessed flat-faced stone mullion window to the ground floor (where two mullions have been removed). Above this is a 2-light and a 4-light window on either side of a stone with the date 1747. A small brick addition on the right provides access to Number 1. Four ridge chimney stacks are visible.
