Description
The building consists of a cottage and barn located to the south of Grotton Hall. The cottage dates from the 18th century and has been altered over time, while the barn is from the 17th century, possibly built in 1656, as indicated by the date on the lintel of the nearby 19th-century Grotton Head Farm. The barn is constructed of squared rubble with a slate roof, and the cottage features squared rubble and hammer-dressed stone with a graduated stone slate roof.
The cottage is two stories high and has a double-depth layout, with the barn adjoining to the left. It includes a central door with a chamfered surround, and windows with two and three lights, although the mullions have been removed. The cottage also has an eaves cornice and coped gables, one topped with a finial and the other featuring a gable stack.
The barn has a projecting plinth, quoins, and vents at two levels. There is a blocked door with one chamfered jamb, opposite a cart entry at the rear. An inclined strut truss with a massive forked tie-beam is supported at the back by a forked post. Additionally, a small shippon is attached at the rear, which has an oeil-de-boeuf window, quoins, a door with a chamfered surround, and coped gables.
