Description

SADDLEWORTH PLATTING ROAD SD 90 SE (east side) 5/231 Cottage and barn to south of 19/6/67 Grotton Hall

Barn, reputed to be tithe barn, and adjoining cottage. Cottage - C18 and later; barn - C17 and perhaps 1656, the date on the lintel of the adjoining C19 Grotton Head Farm (q.v.). Barn - squared rubble with slate roof; cottage - squared rubble and hammer-dressed stone with graduated stone slate roof. 2-storey double-depth cottage with adjoining barn to left. The cottage has a central door with chamfered surround, 2 and 3-light windows (mullions having been removed) eaves cornice, and coped gables one with finial, the other, a gable stack. The barn has a projecting plinth, quoins, vents at 2 levels, a blocked door with one chamfered jamb opposed by cart entry on the rear. An inclined strut truss with massive forked tie-beam is supported at the rear by a forked post. A small shippon adjoins at rear having an oeil-de-boeuf, quoins, door with chamfered surround and coped gables. Bulletin of the Saddleworth Historical Society, Vol.15, No.1, 1985.
