Description

SADDLEWORTH CLOUGH LANE SD 90 SE (south side) 5/57 Nos. 10, 12 - and 14 G.V. II Includes Nos.l, 3,3A and 5 Beech Lane (east side). Wool merchant's warehouse, now 6 houses and a flat. Probably 1820 s. Watershot hammer-dressed stone with slate and graduated stone slate roof. Nos. 10 Clough Lane and 1, 3 and 3A Beech Lane are single-depth with 4 storeys and 4 bays. Nos. 12, 14 Clough Lane and 5 Beech Lane are double-depth, 3 bays and 3 storeys. In each case the Beech Lane houses are entered at first floor level from the rear and occupy the upper floors. Bays 1 to 3 have raised quoins, doors to left and right with square-cut surrounds, 3 flat-faced 2-light stone mullion windows to each floor (blind in bay 2) with 15 or 12-pane sashes, shaped eaves gutter brackets and ridge chimney stacks. Bays 4 to 7 have 5-light windows in bays 4 and 7, 2-light in bay 6 and blocked taking-in doors on all but the top floor in bay 5. Blocked door to bay 6 and door inserted into window of bay 7. The gable and rear have various 2, 3 and 5-light flat-faced stone mullion windows and access to rear house is gained by means of stepped bridges and doors with square-cut surrounds.
