Description
The railway overbridge, built between 1845 and 1849 by A.S. Jee for the Huddersfield & Manchester Railway, is constructed from buff sandstone. It carries a footpath from the north-west to the south-east across the railway and slopes down towards the south-east due to the gradients.
The bridge features a single segmental-arched span set between battered abutments on either side of a steep cutting, along with a parapet. The stonework is regular-coursed and quarry-faced, with the stone of the arch piers and the voussoirs having tooled margins. The keystone is positioned to break the arch both above and below. Dressed features include the impost bands, a sloping string course above the arch, and the chamfered-and-weathered copings of the parapet. The abutments curve slightly outward at all four corners and end in slender piers topped with shallow, pyramidal caps. The arch soffit is made of narrow-coursed masonry with tooled detailing. At the time of the survey in 2017, the road surface was heavily overgrown.
