Description
The railway underbridge, built between 1845 and 1849 by A.S. Jee for the Huddersfield & Manchester railway, is made of buff sandstone. It carries the railway over Manchester Road at a slight angle, running north-south. The structure features a central span flanked by projecting piers, which are connected by in-line wing walls that gently curve outward at the ends and end in additional piers.
The segmental-arch span is supported by v-jointed rusticated abutments with canted corners and a projecting weathered impost band. The soffit, the walls beneath the span, and the upper stonework are constructed from regular-coursed quarry-faced stone. The voussoirs are also rusticated, although they are partially obscured by modern warning signs. The entire length of the wing walls and span is topped with a deep ashlar single-course parapet that features a projecting impost band.
