Description

Christ Church in Friezland is a church built around 1850, with additions made in the 1860s, designed by George Shaw. It is constructed from snecked stone and features a slate roof. The church is designed in the Gothic revival style and includes a nave and chancel, a north-west tower, a south transept, a north aisle, an organ chamber, and a vestry, with the latter elements added later.

The nave has a projecting plinth, weathered buttresses at the corners, and 2-light windows adorned with geometrical tracery and hoodmoulds. There is a porch in the second bay, featuring weathered clasping buttresses, a coped gable, and a finial. The south transept, which used to have a gallery, includes an external flight of steps and a prominent 5-light window on the south side. The north aisle has both 2 and 3-light windows and two gables at its eastern end. A clerestory was added when the aisle was constructed. The chancel has a 3-light window on the east side, with coped gables topped with finials.

The three-stage tower is characterized by diagonal buttresses, a weathered plinth, a shouldered window on the first stage, a cusped lancet window on the second stage, two cusped lancet openings for the belfry, and a broach spire. Inside, the church features low alternating octagonal and circular columns with moulded capitals that support chamfered arches in the north arcade. The roof is supported by arch-braced trusses. Notable carved timber fittings include the pulpit, poppy-head choir stalls, reredos, and chancel panelling, along with a heraldic coat of arms displayed above the door.
