Description
Grotton Hall is a Grade II* listed house located on Saddleworth Platting Road. The building features the initials "IBM 1686" for Isaac and Mary Buckley on the porch lintel, along with "IBK 1725," "EB1844," and "1984" on various datestones. Much of the current structure is a result of a restoration by Edmond Buckley in 1844. The house is constructed from watershot hammer-dressed stone and has a graduated stone slate roof. It is a 5-bay, 2-storey building, which includes an extension in bay 1 and a rear lean-to extension added in 1984.
The house has a projecting plinth and a porch in bay 4 that features an ovolo-moulded surround and an obtuse angle dated lintel, along with raked castellations and ball finials. The windows on both floors consist of 2, 4, and 4-light configurations, all with double-chamfered cavetto-moulded mullions and hoodmoulds that have upturned stops. The ground floor windows are arched, and there is an additional 1-light window above the porch. The gables are coped with ball finials, and there are stone-dressed circular windows in bays 1, 3, and 5. The side and rear of the house display similar window and gable features, including a 3-light pointed arch mullion and transom stair window with Gothic-style tracery.
Inside, the south-east room has panelling and a chimney-piece adorned with carved faces, swags, and side columns. The principal room retains ovolo-moulded ceiling beams with stepped stops, including a bressummer beam over an inglenook fireplace, which has a later stone hearth with an obtuse-angled lintel and recessed spandrels.
