Description

High Knowls is a row of four cottages built in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, constructed in three distinct phases. The cottages are built from roughly coursed and squared stone, with Welsh slate roofs. They are two to three storeys high, with a basement storey beneath the western gable of the end cottage.

The original section comprises two cottages, each with a deep, single-unit plan and double depth, with entrances on the right-hand side. The left-hand cottage (number 1) features a three-light mullioned window on the ground floor, a six-light mullioned window above (some lights now blocked), and a four-light window to the upper storey. The right-hand cottage (number 3) originally had four- and six-light mullioned windows, though some are now blocked. All mullions are square cut and set within plain stone architraves. Each cottage has end wall stacks, with an additional stack on the rebuilt western gable of number 1.

The original block was later extended with a further single-unit, double-depth cottage (number 5), which was placed in front of another cottage (number 7). Cottage number 5 is positioned in front of the original block. The entrance to number 7 is against the gable wall of the original building, with a new window above it. Windows on the gable of number 7 have been renewed in original openings. Number 7 also has a doorway and a renewed window to its front wall. The north elevation follows a similar arrangement, with doorways and windows renewed within what are likely original openings.
