Description

Scout Bottom Farmhouse, dating from 1717, is a single cell house with an added cell to the left and a barn to the right, constructed around 1833. There are also a pair of cottages attached to the rear of the barn. The building is made of hammer-dressed stone and has a stone slate roof, standing two storeys high. The first cell features quoins and flat faced mullioned windows with projecting sills, consisting of three lights on the ground floor and five lights on the first floor. A single storey gabled porch, added in the late 20th century, projects forward at the division with the second cell, which also has quoins and thin flat faced mullioned windows of five lights on each floor. The doorway has composite jambs with a chamfered surround and is inscribed with "W G M A L 1717 1833". The barn includes a tall semi-circular arched cart entry that has been converted into a window, with a mistal doorway to the right featuring monolithic jambs. The house has two gable stacks, while the barn has a higher ridge. The rear cottages (Nos. 24 and 26) each have three-light flat faced mullioned windows on the ground floor and a five-light window on the first floor, along with a doorway that has tie-stone jambs. Only the left side has quoins, as it was originally part of a longer row that has since been demolished. There are two stacks on the ridge of the cottages.
