Description

Scout Farmhouse and the attached barn date from the early 18th century. The building is constructed of watershot masonry and has a stone slate roof. It is two storeys high and has a double pile layout. The exterior features quoins and two bays of double chamfered mullioned windows, with five lights on the left and six lights on the right, each with a doorway on both floors (some mullions have been removed). There is one contemporary stack at the ridge and an early 19th-century stack at the gable. The return wall has double chamfered mullioned windows with three lights on each floor (some mullions removed).

The barn projects forward and also features quoins, with a segmental arched cart entry on skewbacks that has composite jambs and a moulded edge for the door. This entry now serves as a portal in the aisle. The return walls of the portal continue to form two tall stone Gothic pointed arches on either side of the threshing area, which have well-dressed voussoirs and a chamfered surround, creating a barn with three bays. On either side of the arch, there is a chamfered light and a doorway with monolithic jambs.

At the rear, there is a single-storey outshut, previously used as a kitchen, which retains a beehive oven and a large fireplace. This section features a gable, quoins, and a four-light double chamfered mullioned window. The rear of the house has double chamfered mullioned windows with two lights and four lights, including a four-light window on the first floor. Inside the house, there is a fireplace with a stone moulded shelf set in the corner of the rear room, while the front room has a tall fireplace on corbelled jambs with a moulded shelf.
