Description
High Gate Farmhouse and the attached barn, known as High Gate House, is a building that dates from the late 17th century, with a two-cell house added in the mid-18th century to the east, and an early 19th-century barn added to the west. The structure is built of hammer-dressed stone and features a stone slate roof. It stands two storeys tall.
The 17th-century house consists of two cells, each with a 6-light double chamfered mullioned window and a 4-light chamfered mullioned window, although these have been altered on the first floor. There is a noticeable break in the stonework between the two cells. The second cell was originally gabled and retains an earlier roofline and kneeler, with an inserted doorway and a single stack at the ridge.
The 18th-century house has a doorway with tie-stone jambs and a chamfered surround to the left of two bays of double chamfered mullioned windows, which were originally five lights, with a similar arrangement above on the first floor, though with a single chamfer. Both windows lack two mullions. The right-hand return wall features quoins and a gable stack, with another stack at the ridge. The rear of the house has a projecting wing with a first-floor doorway in the gable, which includes a segmental arched doorway with composite jambs and a stop chamfered cyma moulded surround. The gable is coped with kneelers.
The left-hand return wall of the wing has a former 4-light double chamfered mullioned window and a 6-light window above on the first floor, with the mullions removed. The right-hand return wall has 5-light flat faced mullioned windows on the first floor. There is a well-dressed stack at the ridge where the wing meets the main range.
The barn is taller than the house and features a segmental arched cart entry with a Venetian window above, flanked by columbarium on either side. To the right of the barn, there is a mistal doorway with a chamfered surround. The barn has a softwood queen-post roof. Inside the 17th-century house, there is a deep chimney breast that may contain the original fireplace.
