Description

Broadstone Farmhouse, now two dwellings, was built as a laithe-house in approximately 1811. It is located on Fold Lane, near Colden, and has an attached barn. The front of the farmhouse is constructed of ashlar stone, with hammer-dressed stone to the return walls and rear. It is two storeys high. The south front features a central doorway, originally with monolithic jambs but now a window, flanked by sash windows with plain stone surrounds and projecting sills – the glazing has been altered. The attached barn to the right has a segmental arched cart entry with a simple Venetian window above, incorporating an impost and keystone. The lintel of the window bears the date. There is also a mistal doorway with tie-stone jambs. Other features include quoins, an eaves band, gutter brackets, coped gables with kneelers, and an owl hole at the apex of the barn. The rear elevation originally had five-light, flat-faced mullioned windows on either side of a semi-circular arched stair window, featuring an impost block and keystone. The barn mirrors the front’s fenestration. Two tall dressed stacks rise from the ridge. Inside the farmhouse, a dog-leg stair remains, with a slender ramped handrail and paired square balusters to each riser. The interior of the barn includes a wide, transverse segmental arch, with an impost carried on tall piers positioned to the east of the cart entry, the voussoirs having punched margins. Number 1 Broadstone has a mid-20th century dormer window inserted, which does not harmonize with the building’s original design.
