Description

Colden Great House is a house that is partly occupied and partly used for agricultural purposes. It dates from the second half of the 16th century, with an early 17th-century new front added to the west wing. The building is constructed of large finely dressed stone and features a stone slate roof. It has two storeys and follows a hall-and-cross-wings plan, with a rear kitchen wing that was rebuilt in the early 19th century.

The west wing includes a double chamfered mullioned window with a king mullion, consisting of six lights, and a four-light window above it. The hall features a five-light chamfered mullioned window with arched lights, sunken spandrels, and cavetto moulded mullions, along with a three-light fire window, both topped with hoodmoulds. On the first floor, there is a window with a cavetto chamfer that was altered in the early 19th century to consist of ten lights.

The east wing projects forward and has a two-storey integral gabled porch. The doorway here has a richly moulded surround and hoodmould, with a two-light window above that has a deep outer chamfer and a cavetto inner chamfer and mullion. There is also a similar five-light window above another five-light window with arched lights. A projecting water spout is located between the two gables, and the right-hand return wall features a truncated extruded stack. The rear of the house has a four-light window with arched lights on the first floor of the east wing, and the through-passage doorway has a deeply chamfered surround with a two-light window above it. Other mullioned windows are present, and there are three stacks along the ridge.

Inside, the housebody and west wing boast finely reeded ceiling beams. The structure includes a king-post truss with chamfered angle struts, and another truss features vertical struts. Colden Great House is recognized as a fine example of a yeoman clothier's house.
