Description
Higher Colden is a house from the early to mid 17th century, currently used for agricultural purposes. It is constructed of finely dressed stone and features a stone slate roof. The building has a three-room plan with a through passage and a two-storey front, along with a single-storey aisle or outshut at the rear. The front displays a hood over double chamfered mullioned windows, with five lights in the parlour, six lights, and a two-light fire-window in the housebody. On the first floor, there are five chamfered mullioned windows, each with two lights but lacking their mullions. The doorway has composite jambs and a stop-chamfered surround. The service end includes two flat-faced mullioned windows with two lights, and above them, there is a former two-light chamfered mullioned window on the first floor. The right-hand return wall has two two-light chamfered mullioned windows in the aisle and one on the first floor. The gables are coped with kneelers. There is a similar doorway at the rear of the through passage. Inside, the building features a scarf-jointed spine beam and evidence of a former bressumer. The roof structure includes a king post truss with twelve "V" struts.
