Description
Briar Hey comprises a pair of cottages (numbers 6 and 8) attached at right angles to a three-storey textile factory or warehouse (numbers 2 and 4), all dating from the late 18th century. The building is constructed of hammer-dressed stone with a stone slate roof. The two-storey cottages have three bays of thin, flat-faced mullioned windows with three lights to each floor. A wide former taking-in door is set between the first and second bays, now blocked. Each cottage has a doorway with monolithic jambs, and a segmental arched entry leads to the rear. Gutter brackets are present. Two stacks rise from the ridge. The three-storey factory range has a gable facing the road and features similar three-light windows to the ground and first floors, with a Venetian window to the second floor, incorporating an impost block and keystone. Above the Venetian window is a blocked columbarium, with a gable stack to the right. The left-hand return wall has two bays of two-light windows either side of a taking-in bay with a cat-head above. Two doorways feature monolithic jambs. The right-hand return wall has a three-light window to the ground floor, followed by three bays of two-light windows on each of the upper floors.
